Our 5 families are by no means experts at forming small faith communities. We are not qualified to instruct on the bibles teachings, nor do we have all the answers, but we have learned a few things in the past few years and want to encourage anyone who feels like forming their own “Faith & Works” group to go for it and make it happen. God will make imperfect plans perfect and will bless abundantly the efforts made to love and serve others in his name. Our experience has taught us a few things that may help you form your own group. We have compiled a few suggestions from our “Faith & Works” families:
1. Ideal size of group is 5-6 families. Each family takes a two month period. One month is “Faith” and the following month is “Works”.
2. The family prepares for the “Faith” meeting by choosing scripture, presenting the scripture and maybe a craft or breakout meeting discussing the scriptural message. The host family then proposes the “Works” event that embodies the scriptural message. The host family organizes the “Works” event and handles all aspects of communication and calendar planning to ensure the “Works” project is fully staffed and organized.
3. Each member of each family is equal. Each member participates and contributes. All ideas are good ideas. The key here is a supportive, rich engaged atmosphere.
4. Preparation is key. Planning the “Faith” topic and discussion and organizing the “Works” event well ahead of time is very important. It can take many emails and phone calls to get the right plan in place.
5. Breakout groups for the “Faith” meeting and mixing family members with other families during “Works” events are great ideas. Get out of your comfort zone and share ideas and thoughts.
